Named after Johann Ludwig Carl Zincken (1790-1862), who discovered the mineral in Wolfsberg/Stolberg in Germany . He was mineralogist and mining geologist and director of the "Anhalt-Bernburgischen Berg- und Hüttenwerke" in Mägdesprung/ Germany. It was first described by Gustav Rose in 1826.
